Today: Learn how to add value.
If you spend enough time on LinkedIn you’ll start to see a lot of users talking about “adding value" to their network. What does this mean and how do we do it through content writing?
On most social media platforms we spew information out at others and expect their reactions. On LinkedIn, it’s more about sharing information for people so they can better themselves through your content.
One of the most important questions you can ask yourself before posting content is, “How does this post add value to my network?” In other words, how will others improve from your information?
Some of the most successful posts on LinkedIn are the ones that add the most value. People are thankful for it and it’s a great look for your personal brand. If your posts are consistently lacking value and solely throw content AT people and not FOR people, you may face issues in the long term or not see growth that you potentially could.
So what kind of content is valuable content? There are many ways to do this. It really depends on what you want to write about, your audience, your niche and industry. Here’s an easy template to start out with if you don’t already have something in mind:
I found 3 ways to succeed at XYZ.
Step 1 - Make sure to do ABC every day at work. This will increase your odds of making XYZ easier to do and more successful.
Step 2 - Focus on the X, not the Y. When you split your focus, it makes X harder to tackle and can lead to problems.
Step 3 - Use ABC tool correctly. I've found the ABC tool to be super helpful when it comes to changing the X to Y.
These 3 tips will make you better. What are your techniques for XYZ?
Super simple but it gets right to the point and clearly adds value. For bonus points, pose a question to your audience at the end based on these tips. For example, “What else can you add to the list?”
You could also ask users to tag someone who might benefit from reading your tips. It's smart to combine your content writing tools when appropriate for maximum impact.
Here are more brainstorming topics for adding value:
- Tell a story with a message that others could benefit from hearing.
- Give away a free guide that you’ve produced to anyone who responds to your post.
- Feature another user who you think someone should connect with and tell their story.
- Share something new that you learned about LinkedIn that someone else might not know.
- Write a post that helps encourage others who may be struggling with something you’ve overcome.
- Answer a question you’ve been asked in the past that you have expertise on. Try searching Quora for ideas.

Adding value really comes down to focusing on others. Think about what posts have helped or impacted you in the past and write them in your own voice and context in a way that will impact your own network.
Value is the second important ingredient for LinkedIn success. Most people are logging on to learn more. If you fill that need, you capture their interest. Keep an eye out for themes you see people asking about and answer those questions!
